[E] Who knows me long enough knows that I like to learn what I can from the environment. I still cannot work but recently we found out that a classmate from my wife's italian class teaches piano. Never in my life I had imagined myself learning piano but I always wanted to know enough of piano (and music in general) to help me with videos I edit and to enjoy more of this complex thing we hear everyday.
I still dont know if I will need to go back to Brazil in january (probably will). I will do a few lessons and see how it goes.
After the first one I can say it does feel like using tons of brain parts as they say. I was able to read the musical notes (learned only 5) and type them well enough for the first class. Problem is I had to be so focused I didnt even hear what I was playing. Its very funny.
[E] Lorenzo was the first restaurant we went. The lunch time in Italy is split into 4 steps. First the salad, then the "first" (usually some kind of pasta), then the "second" (something like meat) and at last the dessert.
The dessert isnt necessary and we got none in this restaurant. But there was a free cup of coffee and it did the trick.
It was too much food, I must say. My wife barely tasted the second and I ate it very slowly, after all, i wouldnt waste meat and it was very tasty.
The important thing to say about food is that I understand the italian tourists a bit better now. They are known for disliking food out of italian and more often than it would be fair to find it disgusting.
Here there are many brands of anything, the prices can vary a lot. Since we need to save money, we only buy the cheapest and I must admit it is already very good. Italians are very concerned with the food and cook art, if they spent as much time in anything else, they would be uncanny.
In Brazil, we are used to eat anyway. Of course we have some common sense. But if we trust the source of the food to be from a healthy place and looks ok, we could risk it and we would definetely eat if we paid for it. After all, we have many cultures merged and the variety of food we are used to is huge.
Italians wouldnt risk non italian food so easily or should I dare to say willingly.
[E] We came well prepared. We are the 2 only foreigners we know that learned italian BEFORE coming to Italy. Its absurd but people worry about coming here and later in learning how to communicate.
I really cant understand.
We were told by the house owner there was a school here that teaches Italian and after some time we found it. They need the documents proving the person is italian or is legally living here to make the registration (wich means my wife is doing it and I'm not).
Also means that they dont support illegal imigration. Yet I heard there is a church here that teaches illegal people.... To hell with them.
I was really amazed and scared with this chinese guy doing the registration before us. The teacher had to ask the time of the class he would want making numbers with her fingers and writing the numbers in a paper. Im still not sure he got it.
Anyway, when we talked to the teacher, she guessed my wife was from Switzerland - based on her appeareance - but after we started to talk she could be certain our accent was from Brazil.
This was the first sign of this truth in our adventures: we would never be seen as italians. Maybe I can if I dress like them but my wife doesnt have the looks of an italian thats for sure.
Italian people expect us to have trouble with the language and more than once they started chatting in english. And its a fact most italians arent ready to speak in english.
"Può parlare in italiano (You can speak in italian)". Thats easy to fix.
It was when an old man was walking in front of us and realized he didnt want to go that way and turned to us that I understand what I say in this post. Without hesitation he moved his arm like opening passage and said "to you".
[E] There are many things for our taste. One thing to say for those that still dont know: everything here is dubbed. There are still some options to hear original sound but none we can use right now: some movie theaters have special times when the sound is original and every DVD and Blue Ray we have seen have the options of original sound (as well as italian 5.2).
The television is almost 100% the same stuff for all the country (or so it seems). Most of the time is spent with Milan and Rome (and those are the places where great part of the shows is recorded).
The whole communication in Italy is separated mainly by 2 companies: Rai and Mediaset.
Rai is the governamental company and has more educational stuff, some italian cartoons (with a good quality I must say), journalism and very few imported sitcoms and movies if we would compare with Mediaset. (Rai also has the Rai International channel that can be watched in some other countries)
Mediaset has none educational ive seen, a lot of imported cartoons, movies and sitcoms. It has more of those shows I complained about in the previous post (but Rai also has a good share of them). And the real difference is that its owner is Berlusconi and share his views more than Rai (he is theelected prime minister in Italy).
Mediaset is known to do some crazy things on its manipulations and most of the things worth to see are the imported stuff.
These companies have many channels and with the digital television we will have access to more.
From Rai: - Verdetto Finale (final veredict): is an interesting show where they pretend to make a court and handle stuff of people that would like to participate. They usually use the show to decide serious quarrels but not so serious. This court has no legal power but the professionals (like the judge) can explain how it would go in a real court and what could the law do in those circunstances. I find it very insteresting sometimes.
Here is one random episode:
- Occhio alla Spesa: I dont know how to translate this one but I will explain. This show is abot the price of the food we have to buy and how to know what is a good product. It also has hints about how to spend less with the monthly costs and shows how with a bit more of money we can get products with a much better quality. Its a very nice program for those interested in quality of life.
Random video from youtube:
- La Prova del Cuoco (the challenge of the cook): The challenges are many and depends on the day. The important thing is that people are very civilized and there is no argueing. Actually the most important thing is that all recipes are directed to the people at home and what they could do using ingredients they can find anywhere and for a short price. It doesnt mean they teach how to cook french fries, they do wonderful recipes with basic things.
Random video with the new host (the one since 2008)
Mediaset: - Looney Tunes, Anime, Simpsons and others: most of the worth stuff here is the cartoons. From Bugs Bunny to One Piece. There is a lot of stuff to watch.
- Chi Vuol Essere Millionario (who wants to be millionaire): Yes, the same show of the film. The host is a very charming veteran from the italian television (Gerry Scotti) and we usually learn a lot of new words and curiosities about Italy.
- A-Team: God I loved this when I was a boy. Its silly now but I watch it anyway.
- House: Obviously its not the same without the original sound, but its still worth.
La7: This is another company, like Rai and Mediaset. I dont know much about it but its worth to check once in a while.
- Victor o Victoria: A very funny show. At first I thought it would have something to do with Blake Edwards' movie but doesnt seem like it. The guest is interviewed bringing up the funny moments of his/her career. Its a bit hard to explain cause the guest isnt insulted in any way, its actually very civilized show and very entertaining.
