Arancie

[E]
New year in another land and a lot to learn. The last year ended with a street fighter revival where a crazy girl hit the Pope on his staff (not the one you are thinking) and Berlusconi was hit by the Duomo di Milano (actually a small statue).

Now im learning more about the fruits produced in the south of italy and making theories about why they are known for liking sugar so much.

Some time ago i bought a sicilian lemon "jam" thinking it would be anything but too much acid. Well, it wasnt bad, the taste was very good but after eating it there was this taste very acid and bitter wich I really didnt expect.

One thing I decided to do while here is to follow the steps of my father and eat fruits after every meal. When we arrived here there was always something in the news about the swine flu, I thought that was a good oportunity to worry about vitamin C and start to try some oranges.

We were already aware about apples in Italy, we have access to the ones we like (I love Gala and my wife loves Fuji) but now I was trying to figure how to eat some oranges and we tried to make juice since we had the means for it.

The cheapest orange we could find is the one named Tarocco, I didnt know what it meant but we cant be picky untill we get a job. We found out 2 interesting things while trying to make juice:

1 - Strawberries have much more vitamin C than oranges.

2 - It takes too many oranges and too many time to make one glass of orange juice.

Something else we already knew is that the juice already loses a lot of vitamin C. Also we lose a lot of pulp and this is a part rich in vitamins as well.

After like a week, I decided to eat them. Too lazy :P

Then I realized some of them had a half that was red instead of orange. Maybe it was bad? I tried another orange called "Woshinton" (I dont remember the exact name), it tastes much better, more sweet and no red bad parts.

Unfortunately it was cheap but not as cheap and I changed back to the other one again. Again I found the red bad parts... I was frustrated...

As a man of our times there was only one thing I could do: google it.

Turns out its a characteristic of the tarocco oranges and they are produced only in a few parts of south of italy.

I now know I can eat it and I start to think every fruit in the south is acid and maybe even a bit bitter. No problem, as long as its healthy and can be eaten, here I go.
